2019 SO FAR: THE INTERNATIONAL COAL MARKETS IN REVIEW
Published July 2019 by Will Lauberts, Marketing Executive, Coaltrans Events
To date, the 2019 thermal coal market has seen a major correction in the benchmark thermal coal prices. The API2 market has crashed to around $50/t after having been at $95/t a year ago; South African API4 prices have declined from $ 105/t, a year ago, to around $60/t and the Australian Newcastle price has slipped down from $107/t to around $75/t. It should be noted that these low prices are still above the prices which the market experienced in early 2016.
WHY A RESPONSIBLE COAL SUPPLY CHIN MATTERS IN A DECARBONISING WORLD
Published June 2019 by Anne-Claire Howard, Executive Director, Bettercoal
The 2018 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Report has been the latest of many wake-up calls on the imperative to decarbonise our economies. In the fight against CO2 and climate change, coal for power generation has been the primary target. So much so that it has been impossible to give technologies like Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) a real go because they have been branded as “coal-friendly”. Although the end of “King Coal” has been forecasted for decades yet in 2017 global coal demand grew by 1% to 7585 Mt according to the IEA with 2018 following quite closely.

JEREMY SUSSMAN FROM CLARKSONS PLATOU SECURITIES GIVES US HIS VIEWS ON THE US COAL INDUSTRY
Published November 2018 by Tatiza Gondim, Marketing Manager, Coaltrans Conferences
Why have met coal prices remained elevated, and above most expectations?
China, and financial discipline. When China stopped subsidizing a massive amount of loss making production in 1H16, this changed everything. Since then, we’ve seen about 10% of high cost Chinese production come offline....INTERVIEW WITH FASTMARKETS AMM EDITOR, THORSTEN SCHIER: US COKING COAL AND STEEL MARKETS
Published November 2018 by Tatiza Gondim, Marketing Manager, Coaltrans Conferences
What is the outlook for US steel consumption this year?
Consumption overall will likely be up modestly, however, the domestic share of that pie is expected to climb. Imports, traditionally as much as 30% of a market that is typically estimated between 100-120 million short tons of consumption, could be closer to 20% this year given Section 232 tariffs in place. That should help domestic met coal producers, although some facilities have captive supply, so their increases won’t affect the merchant market.
Published August 2018 by Deepali Sharma, Steel Raw Materials Editor, Metal Bulletin
An impetus to infrastructure development in India and the government’s plans targeting steel production capacity of 300 million tonnes per year by 2030-2031 has put India on course to replace China as the top coking coal importer in the world and as a major steel producer.
By 2020, India’s imports of the steelmaking raw material are slated to reach 69 million tonnes, according to the Australian government’s resources and energy quarterly report published last month.
ADAPTING TO CHANGES IN THE INDONESIAN REGULATORY REGIME

& Haydn Dare, Partner, Rahayu & Partners in association with HFW
At Coaltrans Asia, we talked about recent changes in the Indonesian regulatory regime for coal trading and shipping, the effects these changes might have on your sale contracts, and some practical steps parties can take to protect against changes in the regulatory landscape.
Changes in any regulatory regime can be fast paced, unpredictable and often implemented at short notice, and that is certainly the case in Indonesia. In 2018, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) issued two decrees which affect the sale of coal by Indonesian sellers...

MOZAMBIQUE'S COAL REVIVAL
Published June 2018 by Barry Baxter, Reporter, World Coal Magazine
Over the years, the headlines on World Coal’s reports on the re-establishment of Mozambique’s coal industry after almost 20 years of civil war have moved from the optimistic ‘Coal Fires Peace and Prosperity’ (2008), to the warning ‘At the Crossroads As Logistics Threaten Coal Developments’ (2009), ‘Going Somewhere, Slowly’ (2013) and ‘A Game of Risk As Rebels Threaten Rail Operations’ (2014), to the reminder in 2015, ‘Getting There Too Slowly’. This report shows that a major move to re-establish suitable logistics for the newly-emerging coal industry has, at last, achieved considerable success...

$70/T CAP ON INDONESIAN PRICES HIGHLIGHTS TIGHTENING COAL MARKET

The surprising announcement by the Indonesian government that it will cap the price of domestic coal at $70/t (basis 6,000 NAR) is a sign of the issues and contradictions that the coal and wider energy markets will increasingly face in the decades to come. Indonesia’s largest utility, PLN, was surprised (as were many market participants) by the strength of the recovery in coal prices in 2017...

Published January 2018 by Alex Younevitch, Managing Editor - Freight Markets, S&P Global Platts
It is not uncommon for people in various commodity industries to believe that their markets exist in some kind of a happy bubble, where only the obvious supply and demand forces or targeted regulations can make or ruin their day.
